Biography

Derek Hill  was a prominent English portrait and landscape painter. Though born in England, he is most famously associated with Ireland, where he lived for decades and became an honorary citizen in 1999.

Hill is celebrated for his evocative depictions of the Irish landscape, particularly of Tory Island, where he maintained a painting hut for years. His style is often described as a form of realism that emphasizes vibrant light and colour.

He gained significant success in the 1960s as a portrait painter. Notable subjects included Noël Coward, King Charles, and various Irish political figures.
